Week 3B: Goal Setting

PSI's "Choose2Matter" program is an after school program at Park Street Intermediate School. Park Street is home to nearly seven hundred 5th and 6th grade students and is located in Grove City, OH. The program is in its first year and the goal is simple: Give students the time and resources to make an IMPACT on the world. Student groups meet twice a month for two hours at each meeting.  If you are interested, you can find out more about "Choose2Matter" here. Please feel free to follow along with our journey and leave a comment for the students below! Also, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

On Thursday, Oct 10 we had our second 'split' group meeting. The meeting was conducted in the same format as last week but the following groups met: Homelessness/Hunger, Animals and Environment.  The students' main goal of the meeting was to establish a GOAL for the year.

During the meeting the students completed an "Individual Assessment" where they analyzed their strengths and areas of improvements and developed their personal goal.  The students also met with their group members to establish a group goal for the year and an action plan.

Finally, the students blogged about their progress on their Kidblog accounts. Students were encouraged to read other group members' blogs and to give them feedback and suggestions. This part of the meeting is particularly exciting for me as the students get to read blog posts of their group members from the opposite week. Because of numbers, it would be difficult to share ideas, give suggestions and offer feedback from all of the 7 groups. But blogging allows the students to communicate and encourage one another! The students also have been leaving comments and writing posts throughout the week so their small group members can continue to plan!

Here's some information about each group including unedited excerpts from the students' blogs.

Homelessness/Hunger Group Group:
Goal: To raise money and to donate items to the local shelter and/or food bank.

And here's an excerpt from the blog referenced in the last post:

As you can tell from the posts above, the students' enthusiasm is contagious! I am very fortunate to help provide the students with the TIME and RESOURCES to make a difference and I could not be more proud of the work they are doing. . Thank you to both Mrs. Wall and Mrs. Delozier for helping out with the last two meetings!

We will take a week off from Choose2Matter next week because of Parent/Teacher Conferences. Group A will meet on October 24 and Group B will meet again on Oct 31!

Thanks for reading!
Ms. Kress
